Dry skin on the heels can have many causes. The aging process of the skin, the lack of nutrients, incorrect footwear, standing for long periods of time or dry air are just a few reasons for dry feet. Sometimes diseases such as neurodermatitis or diabetes are also responsible for dry feet. If the dryness on the feet intensifies, this can lead, for example, to cracks on the heels and eventually to so-called chapping. These fissures are recognizable by deep furrows in the skin where the tissue is broken open. To prevent cracks on the heels from getting deeper and eventually becoming infected, it is important to treat chapping properly, or better yet, prevent chapping from the beginning.
To avoid dry heels in general, precaution can do a lot. You should regularly take a foot bath for about 10 to 20 minutes in order to prevent brittle and dry spots from forming in the first place,. The bath softens the skin and you can easily remove the excess, dead skin cells mechanically with a pumice stone.
You should also give your feet enough moisture. Dry your feet carefully after a foot bath or an extensive shower. Afterwards, it is best to cream them with a foot cream specially developed for the care of extremely dry and rough feet.
In addition, be sure to wear appropriate footwear. This way you avoid pressure points and give cornification, on the heels no chance.
If, despite good care, you have cracks or chapping, it is advisable to treat them specifically. Cracks on the heels are not only unsightly, but can also cause severe pain and in the worst case lead to inflammation. Chapping causes the body’s natural protective covering to be attacked, allowing pathogens such as bacteria or fungal spores to enter. If the dry and cracked heels show signs of inflammation, then we recommend that you see a doctor and thus receive specialized treatment for the infection.
If there is no inflammation, you can treat the affected area yourself. Since the horny areas need a lot of moisture, we recommend a rich chapped skin ointment. An optimal time to let them soak in is during sleep, as our feet are not stressed during the night. Apply a generous amount of cream to the affected areas on your feet before going to bed, then put on a pair of cotton socks and wear them all night. This allows the ointment to develop its full effect. In order to determine success in the treatment of chapped skin, we recommend using the chapped skin ointment for a period of at least two weeks.
After the successful treatment of chapped heels, you should continue to use a special chapped heel ointment to prevent the formation of new cracks on the heels.
